How to Install a Hose Bib (Spigot) for a Leak-Free

Installing a hose bib or spigot is a common DIY project that can prevent leaks and improve outdoor water access. By selecting the right type of bib, preparing the pipe correctly, and sealing connections, you can avoid costly repairs later.

Lead with the right valve: Choose a freeze-proof hose bib for climates with cold winters to reduce the risk of pipe bursts. If you live in a milder region, a standard outdoor spigot may suffice. Ensure the bib has compression or threaded connections compatible with your plumbing.

Gather your tools and materials: You’ll typically need a replacement hose bib, pipe wrench or adjustable wrench, plumber’s tape (Teflon tape), pipe dope or thread sealant, and safety equipment. If you’re working with copper, you may also need a tubing cutter and flux.

Turn off the water and prepare the supply line: Shut off the indoor water supply to the outdoor line. Open the existing bib to relieve pressure and drain the line. If you’re replacing an old bib, carefully remove it and inspect the pipe for corrosion or damage.
