Storms often bring heavy rain, flooding risks, and the looming possibility of a power outage. A sump pump relies on electricity to power its motor, so when the lights go out, the pump may stop working unless you have a backup plan. Without power, a sump pump can fail to remove water, increasing the risk of basement flooding and property damage.

What happens during a power outage?

In most homes, a standard sump pump is wired to the house’s electrical system and will not run during an outage. If the storm continues and groundwater rises, standing water can accumulate in basements, crawlspaces, and low-lying areas. This can cause water intrusion, mold growth, and costly repairs. Some newer models include battery backups, but even those rely on a charged battery and may be affected by prolonged outages or improper maintenance.
