| Causes of Pinhole Leaks:
- Pitting Corrosion: Caused by chemical reactions between the copper metal and dissolved minerals, pH imbalance, or chlorine in municipal water.
- High Water Velocity: High pressure (>80 PSI) or excessive flow velocity erodes the protective copper oxide layer inside the pipe.
- Turbulence: Sharp pipe bends or unreamed cut pipe edges cause turbulent water flow that gradually wears down the copper wall.
How to Fix:
- Temporary Repair: Pipe repair clamps or rubber sleeves can stop the leak temporarily, but they are not long-term solutions.
- Permanent Repair: Cut out the damaged section and sweat (solder) in a new piece of copper pipe, or convert the section using PEX piping with approved press fittings.
- Pro Tip: If you notice multiple pinhole leaks in a short period, it usually indicates widespread pipe degradation, and a partial or full home repiping should be evaluated.
