How do I know if my sump pump failure is caused by the float switch or the motor?

My sump pit is filling up with water, but the pump isn't turning on automatically. How can I test if it's just a bad float switch or if the entire pump is dead?

You can diagnose this issue quickly with a simple test:
  • Bypass the Float Switch (Piggyback Plug Test):
    • Most standard sump pumps (e.g., Zoeller M53/M98) use a piggyback plug system where the float switch plugs into the wall, and the pump plugs into the back of the switch.
    • Unplug the pump from the float switch plug and plug the pump cord directly into the wall outlet.
    • If the motor runs immediately, your float switch is defective and needs replacement.
    • If the motor makes no sound, hums without spinning, or trips the circuit breaker, the motor/capacitor has failed, and the unit requires replacement.


    Preventative Tip: Always ensure the float switch is free of debris and not jammed against the wall of the sump basin or discharge pipe. Adding a dual float switch or battery backup system provides crucial redundancy during heavy storms.
