  • Resin beads visible in the tank appear cracked, discolored, or reduced in volume when checked

Signs that point to something else instead:
  • Softener works fine after regeneration but hardness creeps back gradually — often a salt or brine tank issue (low salt, salt bridging, or a clogged injector) rather than resin failure.
  • Inconsistent softening — could be a timer/control valve malfunction rather than the resin itself.
  • Sudden total failure — often electronic/control head related, not resin.
