Heavy rain season can turn a basement into the first place where water shows up—whether through cracks in the foundation, clogged drains, or backflow from the sewer system. While every home is different, a proactive storm-prep plan can significantly lower the odds of flooding and help you respond faster if weather turns severe.

Start with a quick basement “water map”

Before storms arrive, walk through your basement and identify likely entry paths. Look for damp spots, staining on walls and floors, mildew odors, and areas where water naturally collects after rainfall. Raise valuable items off the floor—especially cardboard boxes, clothing, and paper documents—and consider using plastic bins with tight-fitting lids. If you store tools, paint, or cleaning chemicals in the basement, keep them elevated and organized to limit losses from unexpected water.

After any period of wet weather, improve circulation by running a dehumidifier or fans if safe to do so. Mold can begin forming within days, and early drying helps protect both the structure and indoor air quality.
